Institution / PurposeCategoryCopies

Why Ordering Too Few Is Costly

Every institution that requires a death certificate needs its own certified original — you cannot photocopy a certified copy and submit the photocopy to a second agency. Each copy "used" by an institution that retains it is permanently consumed. Re-ordering certified copies later requires a new application, another wait (4–12 weeks in many states), and the same per-copy fee. The time cost far outweighs the small expense of ordering extras upfront.

The most common mistake: ordering only 5–6 copies because they "seem like a lot," then running out before the estate is fully settled — and having to wait another 8 weeks for a new batch while financial accounts sit frozen.
